I work at an auto parts store, so I get really good prices on parts, and I have lots of mechanic contacts. So does everyone else that works here, so our cars wind up pretty exceptionally well-maintained. Almost all of them, at least. Some of our cars still manage to be unreliable.....
Amongst the employees and managers, the newest cars are a 2015 Grand Cherokee V6, a 2011 or 2012 Wrangler 4 door, a 2015 Colorado, a 2015 CX5, and a current generation Volvo S60, not sure the year. Less new cars include a 2004 G35 sedan, my 2006 Legacy wagon, a 2005 Taurus, a ‘97 Taurus, an ‘88 Volvo 240, 2001 Focus hatch, a 2004 Murano, a 2003 TJ an ‘84 Cavalier, and I’ll leave it at that because the others haven’t been here very long so I can’t speak to their reliability.
The oldest, the Volvo, recently needed a bunch of vacuum lines replaced, a full brake job, and an exhaust leak repaired. All normal for a car from 1988.
The Murano needed an ignition coil recently, and also burns oil.
The Focus needed the turn signal module replaced, but that’s the only thing it’s needed in years other than oil changes apparently.
The Cavalier got a full tune-up, it’s first ever since it has 85,000kms on it.
Basically, everything needs regular maintenance, except for the Colorado, and the Jeeps.
The Colorado goes in for recalls every couple months, but has been perfect otherwise. The GC, which was replacing a 2012 GC V8, because it was too unreliable, is at the dealer for recall work, or electrical problems a few times a month. The Wrangler has been somewhat more reliable, but recently went to the dealer because it was dumping some fluid all over the road, so we’ll find out what that problem is soon..... It has also had it’s fair share of recall work and electrical problems, but not nearly as bad as the GC. Basically, what I’ve learned over the last couple years, is to not buy a new GC unless I want to be in a loaner Cherokee, which also needs towed and then replaced with another loaner Jeep.

when you say “electrical” issues, what nature are they? Battery drain? Modules not working or freaking out (software/firmware?) wiring/circuit faults?
anecdotally I see a lot of electrical problems come down to software/bus communication problems.

It feels odd to daily the jeep. It rattles and has the coefficient of drag like the space shuttle on final approach but its been reliable and doesn’t snowball in repairs like the e38. Damn 7 would break something after a repair.

In general I don’t know, she just says electrical stuff isn’t working. The only specific ones I heard about was the tailgate not releasing or locking right, and the shifter intermittently working

I have a ‘11 Wrangler and last week it decided it didn’t want to start. The dash light came on, but the starter didn’t even attempt to turn over. There were no sounds at all when I turned the key except for a click from the TIPM. I took the battery out to have it tested, and it was good. I put the battery back in, and then the truck fired up. It was weird. The terminals were tight with no corrosion as well.
When I open up the doors all the interior lights flash, and the lights on my HVAC controls flicker sometimes. Oh Jeep...

The JKs have a lot of issues with bad TIPMs which can cause all sorts of stuff to go wonky.

Jeeps are made to go 10k miles tops. Just, you know, anywhere. They can take the toughest terrain, just still only that 10k. Or 10k of mall crawling, doesn’t matter.

It’s nice that the parts store you work at pays enough for you to take advantage of the discounts.
When I worked at a parts store, that wasn’t the case. But it didn’t really matter all that much cause I was dailying the Niva then, and none of Partsource’s part sources could get parts. I knew that, but my manager was insistent. So I handed him a list and he spent a day and a half calling literally everyone, even calling manufacturers directly and no results at all... When three clicks over at LadaPower.com will have anything I need.

Well I’m not quite paid enough to take advantage of it. If I was, I’d be flipping cars as much as I could. I’m just paid enough to get by maintaining my own car.
Well that’s nice of the manager to do what they could at least, if a little obviously pointless

He definitely did it of his own volition... I strongly discouraged him from it because I knew he would find nothing. I think if anything he just wanted to prove to me I was wrong, simply because I seldom was.
